What is the hopscotch pattern?
What is the hopscotch pattern? People all over the world play the hopping game of Hopscotch in various names. In Tamil, it is known as ‘Nondi or Paandi’, in Hindi as ‘stapu or Kit-Kit’, and in Telugu as ‘Thokkudu billa’. Hopscotch is a popular outdoor game played by a group of children.
The game involves drawing a grid on the ground. Players toss a small object, called a lagger, into numbered triangles or rectangles outlined on the ground. They then hop or jump through the spaces to retrieve the object. In this game, players draw a long rectangular box vertically, which is split into three compartments.
The compartments have been given numbers as shown. Someone adds two boxes over box number three as shown below. Now, someone needs to complete the drawing as shown below
A group of children play this game one after the other. Each child holds a small flat stone. In the first round, the first child throws the stone into box 1. If the stone falls out of the box, the child must wait until the next turn. If it lands correctly, the child jumps to box 2 with one leg and continues to box 3.
When the child reaches the double box, they should place one leg in box 4 and one leg in box 5. They continue moving with a single leg in each box until they reach the top. At the top, the child turns around and moves back the same way to box 2. Upon reaching box 2, the child picks up the stone from box 1 and skips back to the starting point. If the child places both legs on the ground within the boxes, they are OUT and must wait for the next turn
After completing the game with the stone in box 1, the stone must be dropped into box two. If the stone does not fall within box 2 or falls into other boxes, the turn is over.
When a player throws the stone on box 2, they will hopscotch in box one and skip box 2 before jumping into box three. They will then reach the top and return to box 3, picking up the stone from box 2. Finally, they will jump into box 1 by skipping box 2.
This game allows all the kids to take their turns. The player who completes all the boxes will be declared the winner. This fun and engaging activity promotes physical activity and coordination skills among children.
