ORIGIN

Paramapatham otherwise known as Thayam in Tamil Nādu, Vaikunthapali or Paramapada  in Andhra Pradesh, Sopana Patam in Telugu, and in Hindi, this game is called Saanp aur Seedhi, Saanp Seedhi, and Mokshapat is a very popular indoor game which has been played worldwide as “snakes and ladders”. Paramaptham initially originated in India several decades ago.

MEANING

Paramapatham is linked with Hindu mythology. According to this game, grids personify a man’s life span, ladders as his virtues, and snakes as his sins.

THINGS REQUIRED

1. Paramapatham board.

            2. Dice.

            3. Coins of different colors for each player (small stones, sea shells, etc.)

HOW TO PLAY

Paramapatham has a board with a total of 100 squares marked by ladders and snakes randomly. If a snake’s head is located in a square, it will end a few steps down. Players can use game pieces such as Seeds, Coins, and Shells.

Two or more members can play this game. It will be very engaging with a larger group of people.

The players start the game by rolling the dice one by one. The player who rolls a one (Thayam) will have the opportunity to place the coin first, and then they will move the coin according to the numbers on the dice. When the dice lands on the head of the snake, the coin moves down to the grid where the tail of the snake is located. If the coin lands in the grid with the bottom of the ladder, the player can climb up the ladder and advance to the grid where the top of the ladder is placed. The person who rolls numbers 1 and 6 will get another chance to roll the dice. The player who reaches the 100th grid first will be considered the winner.

BENEFITS

Paramapatham teaches us an important life lesson: sins will never help us climb the ladder to the top; instead, they will only drag us down like snakes in the game. This shows us that good deeds are what truly help us to grow. The game also demonstrates that life will have both ups and downs. Overall, Paramapatham helps children develop through their good deeds and prepare them to be courageous in facing future challenges.
