How to play Sathurangam?

ORIGIN

Sathurangam  is an indoor game that originated in India around the 6th century  and spread to various parts of the world. which is commonly player chess around the world.

THINGS REQUIRED

  • Chessboard
  • 32 coins, which have 16 white and 16 black coins.

RULES OF CHESS

Step1:

The  major rule of chess is to save the king from the enemy army using the other coins.

  • Each coin has a separate rule move,  cannot move other than their specified rule to move. coins of opponent can be captured according to those moves and coins of the same army cant  be captured.
  • To begin with soldiers, soldiers can move only one step forward and can capture coin of opponent diagonally only. They cannot capture the coin directly a step forward of them.

Step2

Now with the elephant coin, this coin can move as many steps  forward or backward as it need to protect the king from opponent and capture the opponent. Only thing is that it can move in a straight line and cannot move diagonally.

Step3

Bishop coins are one among the powerful coins in the chess. Bishop can move as many steps as required but only diagonally.

Step4

knights coins are a special coins in the game. They can override a coin of same army and opponent one. They are moved in such a way that it makes ‘L’ shape by two squares in one direction and three squares in the perpendicular direction.

Step5

Now to see with the Queen, it is the most powerful among all others. This coin can be moved either in a straight line or diagonally as far as required without colliding her own coin but can capture the opponent coin.

Finally comes the star of the show -The King. The king is the most important coin for which the game is happening but it can move only one step in all direction to protect itself.

HOW TO PLAY

Sathurangam comprises of totally 64 squares which includes 8 rows and 8 columns.

Only two player can play this game at a time. Coins are arranged as shown below.

Now as per the rules to move the coins each player has to do their moves with one turn to each other. The opponent players can capture the coins of the other player by moving the coins as per rules ( i.e. if there is a soldier diagonal to opponent soldier then it can be captured as shown below).

When the opponent king is  to be captured and he cannot make any move and escape which is check mate and game ends in here.

This game is a brain booster and an engaging  one. It helps in brain devolopmet by thinking and making correct moved to capture the opponent king. It also teach us to fight till the end without giving up on difficulties.
